7 Ways to Set the Stage for Sound Sleep

man sleeping soundlyTired of tossing and turning each night, and waking up groggy and unrefreshed? You’re not alone, but you can do something about it. Good sleep is vital for our health. We spend a third of our lives slumbering, which is when the healing of our bodies takes place.

Getting enough sleep is essential for the body to detox, heal, and repair itself. Studies have shown that when we sleep, our bodies release many hormones and proteins, which help reduce inflammation, boost immunity, strengthen tissue, and promote healing.
Here are 7 ways to set yourself up for a good night’s sleep:

#1. Power Down Those Devices

From texting to streaming, we all spend significant time on our digital devices, the blue light from which can wreak havoc on our ability to shut down each night. It’s a good idea to turn off these devices at least 30 minutes before bed.

#2. Keep Your Bedroom Conducive to Sleep

As your bedroom is your sleep sanctuary, make sure it’s quiet, relaxing, dark, and at a comfortable temperature. You don’t want it to be too hot or too cold.

#3. Stick to Your Bedtime Routine

While it may be tempting to stay up late to watch one more episode of your favorite Netflix series, it’s important to go to bed at the same time each night, including weekends. It’s also essential to get up at the same time every day. Being consistent reinforces your body’s sleep-wake cycle.

#4. Watch What You Eat & Drink

Avoid eating large meals, consuming caffeine, and drinking alcohol before bedtime, all of which can interfere with your ability to get good sleep.

#5. Fit Physical Activity into Your Day

Whether you enjoy walking, running, cycling, or CrossFitting, regular physical activity during the day can promote better sleep. However, avoid being active too close to bedtime, as this could have an unwanted energizing effect.

#6. Choose a Supportive Pillow and Mattress

Regardless of the type of mattress you prefer (e.g. memory foam or spring), it’s important to replace it every 8-10 years, so you can get proper support along your back and spine. It’s also a good idea to choose a mattress free of chemicals, such as flame retardant. There are many “green” mattress brands from which to choose.

Finding a supportive pillow is vital too. Dr. Carly likes the Core Products brand of pillows, which feature a dip for your head and hump for neck support.

#7. Get Adjusted

Regular chiropractic care can foster sound slumber. How? By alleviating stress, promoting relaxation, and relieving pain.
